ABSTRACT
OF ARTICLE ON
STARATEGIES
FOR ASIAN CLOTHING INDUSTRY IN GLOBALISATION ERA
RM.
SANKAR, ITCTI, ATIRA
Published in Indian textile Journal, Volume 114, No.1, October
2003
Textile
and clothing industry in the Asian region is by far the largest
with a huge production base as well as major market for textile
and clothing products. China is the biggest player in the global
garment trade. Garment industry is fragmented in almost all the
Asian countries and many countries depend on imports of fabrics
for supplies to their garment industry. As the global garment
trade is slated to be around US $ 300 bn out of the total US $ 500
bn global textile and garment trade by the year 2005, clothing
industry in Asian countries should startegise not only to retain
their major share but also to compete with better placed new
players such as Mexico, Caribbean countries and Central and East
European countries. Some of the generic and specific strategies
are dealt with in the article which include complementing instead
of competing among Asian countries, sub-contracting, compliance of
codes of conduct, reduction in barriers to trade, abreast with WTO
developments, sensitivity to dumping, business in preferential
areas, strategic marketing and so-on. The article also deals with
unit specific and product specific strategies.
